The #SMARTer2030 opportunity: ICT Solutions for 21st Century Challenges By The Global eSustainability Initiative

“Grouping about 30 of the world’s leading ICT and telecom companies, GeSI (Global eSustainability Initiative) has been working to raise awareness of the industry potential in enabling the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy, including through the development of studies assessing the carbon savings of ICT solutions. The SMARTer2030 report is the this instalment in the acclaimed SMART series of the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI).

Released in 2015, SMARter2030 builds on the findings of the SMART2020 and SMARTer2020 reports, published in 2008 and 2012 respectively. It quantifies the carbon savings of ICT solutions in eight economic sectors (mobility and logistics, manufacturing, food, buildings, energy, work and business, health, and learning), demonstrating how it can enable a 20% reduction of global CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030, maintaining them at 2015 levels.

Expanding on the first two reports, SMARTer2030 also considers additional environmental benefits such as air quality, and for the first time explores the social dimension of ICT benefits, such as improvement in the quality of life thanks to e-health or remote working solutions reducing travel and freeing up time for personal activities.

SMARTer2030 also looks at the economic dimension of this digital revolution: it estimates that the adoption of ICT solutions in the economic sectors examined could generate more than $11 trillion per year by 2030, i.e. the equivalent to the GDP of China in 2015.

Finally, the report makes a number of recommendations on how to accelerate the uptake of digital solutions so as not to miss out on the tremendous potential they offer; these recommendations are aimed at policymakers, consumers, and businesses, as the key stakeholder groups who can drive adoption in order to reap the full benefits of the digital revolution.”
