In week 1, we explore examples of how to take action on SDG 1, which calls to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

The Global Challenge:
Despite the fact that the global poverty rate has been halved since 2000, intensified efforts are required to boost the incomes, alleviate the suffering, and build the resilience of those individuals still living in extreme poverty, in particular in sub-Saharan Africa. Social protection systems need to be expanded and risks need to be mitigated for disaster-prone countries, which also tend to be the most impoverished, as stated by the Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform.
The Business Opportunity:
According to the UN Global Compact, recent experiences with economic growth show that “strong markets and strong societies go hand in hand”. Businesses have found opportunities in developing innovative products and services to serve communities affected by poverty, and in leveraging these groups “as consumers, employees in the value change, supplies/distributors, and community members.”
