USIBC and CII Shift Attention to Small/Medium Enterprises in Advance of President Obama’s Visit to India

September 21, 2010 – Washington, DC – In anticipation of President Obama’s historic visit to India, the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) proudly hosted the inaugural meeting of the interactive Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Forum, “Integrating SMEs into the U.S.-India Value Chain”. The event was done in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), who organized a distinguished CEO delegation led by Mr. Hari Bhartia, CII President and Managing Director of Jubilant Organosys. In the busy fall schedule of global sourcing events, the Global Sourcing Forum is one where the GSC is working with the conference organizers to bring a focus on sustainable and socially responsible sourcing practices – 3S. GSC Chair Christine Bullen is chairing the panel, “Socially Responsible Outsourcing: Making an Impact from Green Sourcing to Economic Development.” In her role as moderator, Bullen will introduce the important initiatives that the GSC is promoting, for example, the 3S Scorecard and the 3S Awards that will be announced November 10 as part of the Annual Meeting. She will use the panel as an opportunity to call for increased efforts on the parts of all companies engaged in global sourcing to incorporate 3S practices and reap bottom line benefits of socially responsible practices.

The panel speakers will each discuss specific 3S practices from their organizations. The panel has not been finalized yet, but potential contributors include: World Bank, Skype, Direct Brands/Godiva, Unilever and IBM.

9th International Smart Sourcing Conference, January 5-6, 2011 IIT, Delhi India

The focus of this event in Delhi, India is: SOURCING OF SERVICES WORLDWIDE: IMPACT ON GLOBAL ECONOMIC DIVIDE. This conference is organized by the Center for Global Outsourcing which is a research center at Long Island University, and combines academic and practice-oriented sessions. GSC Chair Christine Bullen is co-chairing the track on Global Outsourcing Curriculum and will be assisted in this job by Jimmy Gandhi, who is leading the GSC initiative on the 3S Scorecard.
The track, focusing on education and curriculum, is an excellent opportunity to highlight programs around the world that are teaching about strategy and practice in global sourcing. There is barely a managerial position today that does not involve a global sourcing agreement. Practicing managers have learned about creating and implementing sourcing strategy “on the job” and, given the growth in global sourcing, it has become critical that these topics be offered in management degree programs.
There is a call for papers located here http://www.outsourceglobal.org/call-for-papers/ and you are encouraged to contact Christine Bullen if you wish to submit a paper or if you have ideas for programs that should be highlighted in the session. This is a great opportunity to help shape education and curriculum to focus on the key issues of global sourcing. These include the GSC initiatives on sustainable and socially responsible sourcing. We need your help in identifying programs – both degree programs at universities and corporate training programs – that can be brought into this event.
