The message coming from global leaders debating during the last four Word Economic Forums in Davos has been loud and clear– in today’s business environment, corporations must go beyond serving shareholders and commit to long-term shareholders’ values in order to achieve long-term sustainable economic success. As the examples of Nike, Exxon or Apple-Foxconn cases demonstrate, underestimating social risks impacts returns on investment.
How prepared are corporate managers to address this new reality of defining and managing economic risk by incorporating assessment and mitigation of social and environmental risks?
Managers of global supply chains are on the front line of defining and serving global stakeholders. As more and more organizations become global and as outsourcing becomes a standard practice in today’s corporate world, traditional roles in supply chain management depart from its original charter of purchasing and logistics. The definition of stakeholders also evolves, embracing diversity of the global workforce performing its functions in a variety of non-standard working environments, local communities in which employees live and businesses operate; availability of resources and environmental needs.
In this panel discussion, experts from Microsoft, Chrysler and the Rockefeller Foundation will share their views and experience in implementing principles of global citizenship into organizational practices. The debate will touch on challenges of incorporating interests of variety of other stakeholders into the corporate business model driven by short-term economic results. The role and responsibilities of leadership and corporate values in safeguarding global economic and social progress will be analyzed against a backdrop of today’s violative global environment.
Tim Hopper is the Responsible Sourcing Manager for the Microsoft Global Outsourcing’s Service Providers where his responsibilities include extending Microsoft’s social and environmental practices to its global services outsourcing solutions. Previous to Microsoft, Tim served as a federal financial institution examiner as well as the CEO of a financial institution. Tim holds a graduate degree in Finance from the University of Wyoming and a graduate certificate in Ethics from the University of Washington. Tim is especially proud of being a husband and a father of three beautiful children Renee, Ethan, and Kate. He and hiswife, Dedra, live in Seattle,Washington.
Todd Yaney is part of the Corporate Sustainability Core Team at Chrysler Group, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. He is responsible for the societal aspects of the organization’s corporate responsibility, which include Chrysler’s workforce and supply chain. Most of his career has been within Procurement and Supply in the U.S. and Europe, creating a strong understanding of the intricacies and real-life aspects facing the global manufacturing supply chain. In 2010 he helped with the development of Chrysler’s Sustainability Team, who published their first CR report in 2011. Todd has served as Chrysler’s Executive-on-loan to AIAG (the Automotive Industry Action Group), where his primary activity was supporting supply chain initiatives with an emphasis on corporate social responsibility and in particular the Global Working Conditions Initiative.
As Associate Director in the Africa Regional Office, Ms. Eme Essien Lore supports the development and execution of several initiatives. She serves as the regional champion for the Foundation’s Harnessing the Power of Impact Investing initiative, which works towards consolidating and catalyzing the evolving industry of impact investment for both social and environmental benefits. She will also help advance the Foundation’s work entitled Poverty Reduction through Information and Digital Employment (PRIDE). PRIDE is working in Africa to foster and scale up a new arm of the outsourcing industry called impact sourcing (IS), which are programs aimed at creating employment for the poor by establishing meaningful jobs in the information technology industry. Prior to joining Rockefeller, Ms. Essien Lore spent several years with the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank. Dr. Wanda Lopuch’s unique combination of entrepreneurial drive, global mindset, multi-language executive skills and corporate responsibility expertise have been critical in allowing her to successfully exploit growth opportunities in technology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology companies as well as in the not-for-profit sector. In doing so, she strongly advocates and practices capitalism-based idea of “doing well by doing good”.
In addition to her function as Chair of the GSC Board, Dr. Lopuch leads MDA Associates, Inc., a consulting organization focusing on “greening” the global operations and their supply chains while improving economic outcomes of businesses in the life sciences, IT, FMCG and financial sectors. With 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and telecommunication sectors spanning across the United States, Europe, and East Asia, Dr. Lopuch guided international teams for maximizing performance in multinational, multicultural and multi-functional projects. Prior to establishing MDA Associates Inc., Dr. Lopuch was the president of Medical Data Management Inc., the company she founded and grew into a multi-million dollar business with locations in 7 countries. After the successful acquisition of Medical Data Management by Dendrite International, Dr. Lopuch served as the Vice President and General Manager of Dendrite Central and Eastern Europe.
Dr. Lopuch holds a Ph.D. in Administration and Supervision from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, and an MS in Computer Sciences from the Wroclaw University of Technology in Wroclaw, Poland. She lectures on various aspects of international business.
